When pollen levels are high throughout the United Kingdom, people may wonder if they are experiencing hay fever or coronavirus symptoms.

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • High temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back

  • New, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours

  • Loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Most people with coronavirus have at least one of these symptoms.

People with allergies can experience lots of symptoms, including sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose (nasal congestion), or itchy, watery eyes. Allergies don’t usually cause a fever and are not usually accompanied by a new or continuous cough, or loss or change to sense of smell or taste.
